Taiwan: Housework and Care Activities Visualization

Description:

This visualization brings into focus housework and care activities, casting other tasks in muted gray tones to emphasize its central theme. Drawing from the Taiwan Social Development Trends Survey 2004, the visualization is based on a random sample of 800 participants, split evenly between women and men. The graphical representation reveals that in Taiwan, women continue to shoulder the majority of housework tasks, especially during the morning hours.

Dataset Origin:

The data stems from the Taiwan Social Development Trends Survey conducted in 2004. With a balanced sample of 400 women and 400 men, it offers a holistic view of daily activities, especially housework and care routines.

Visualization Insights:

While other activities are subtly depicted in gray, housework and care duties are the only in color, highlighting the gender disparities in domestic roles. The ebb and flow of node movements showcase activity patterns as the day progresses. Although the diary starts at midnight in Taiwanese time use data, as dawn approaches, the visualization comes alive, vividly depicting the gender-based distribution of housework tasks.

Utility:

This visualization serves as a valuable tool for sociologists, gender studies scholars, and policymakers aiming to grasp the distribution of housework and care duties in Taiwan. Beyond mere data representation, it sparks a conversation about societal norms, gender roles, and potential areas of reform.

Interactive Features:

As the visualization progresses through the 24-hour cycle, users will witness dynamic node movements, illustrating the surge in housework activities. The emphasis on housework and care duties is complemented by the subdued portrayal of other tasks, ensuring a clear distinction for the viewer.
