Evaluating Dementia Policy in England, 2009-2015

This latest visualization delves into the impact and trajectory of dementia policies in England from 2009 to 2015. Drawing upon the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing data, the infographic highlights imminent challenges, including an expected 35% increase in dementia cases by 2025 and a staggering 146% by 2050. Such projections translate to an estimated financial strain of £55 billion for the UK by 2040.

The infographic juxtaposes two major initiatives: The "National Dementia Strategy" (2009-2012), a groundbreaking effort to enhance diagnoses and uplift care standards; and the "Dementia Challenge" (2012-2015), designed to boost public awareness and ensure timely diagnosis for those aged 65 and over.

Through analysis, the effectiveness of these strategies was evaluated. Age effects reveals a concerning trend of underdiagnosis in younger seniors. While the period effects show initial momentum in diagnoses that plateaued over time, the cohort analysis presents a brighter picture, emphasizing the positive impact of preventive measures and lifestyle modifications.

Based on the findings, three imperative recommendations emerge:

  • Prioritize diagnostic efforts for younger seniors.
  • Address the diagnostic plateau.
  • Sustain the momentum of dementia awareness campaigns.
